چکیده

Powered flight was first mastered by insects, many millions of years ago. Now, studies with the fruit fly Drosophila melanogaster reveal the critical role of a conserved transcription factor in programming the development of specialized flight muscles.

Cold rearing improves cold-flight performance in Drosophila via changes in wing morphology.

We use a factorial experimental design to test whether rearing at colder temperatures shifts the lower thermal envelope for flight of Drosophila melanogaster Meigen to colder temperatures. D. melanogaster that developed in colder temperatures (15 degrees C) had a significant flight advantage in cold air compared to flies that developed in warmer temperatures (28 degrees C). At 14 degrees C, col...

Development as adaptation: a paradigm for gravitational and space biology.

Adaptation is a central precept of biology; it provides a framework for identifying functional significance. We equate mammalian development with adaptation, by viewing the developmental sequence as a series of adaptations to a stereotyped sequence of habitats. In this way development is adaptation. The Norway rat is used as a mammalian model, and the sequence of habitats that is used to define...

Use of animal models for space flight physiology studies, with special focus on the immune system.

Animal models have been used to study the effects of space flight on physiological systems. The animal models have been used because of the limited availability of human subjects for studies to be carried out in space as well as because of the need to carry out experiments requiring samples and experimental conditions that cannot be performed using humans. Experiments have been carried out in s...

From disease to development to cell biology and back.

Nowadays, the focus of developmental studies is shifting away from formal models of developmental pathways that are characterised by flow charts of controlling factors connected by arrows, to mechanistic models that explain developmental processes at the cellular level. Surprisingly, this shift towards a cellular view of developmental biology is occurring simultaneously across a range of model ...

Distinct developmental pathways underlie independent losses of flight in ratites.

Recent phylogenetic studies question the monophyly of ratites (large, flightless birds incorporating ostriches, rheas, kiwis, emus and cassowaries), suggesting their paraphyly with respect to flying tinamous (Tinamidae). Flightlessness and large body size have thus likely evolved repeatedly among ratites, and separately in ostriches (Struthio) and emus (Dromaius). Here, we test this hypothesis ...
